post-dOCUMENTIC reflexions, 2012



This year in August, my husband and I had the chance to visit the biggest contemporary art of the last years, dOCUMENTA (13), which took place in various museums, galleries, parks, shopping centers, palaces in Kassel, Germany. We attended some of the tours which were organized under various concepts. The guides who lead explained with enthusiasm about the works. Normally, a visitor of dOCUMENTA wonders not only the artistic content of the works but also, who is the curator, how is she or he selected, the budget of the event, how the artists are selected, and of course how much each is paid…We learned that the tour guides were selected through a tough audition, that those coming from abroad had to pay for there own travel expenses to Kassel and were not paid for their 3 months of intense work. It was remarkable how each artwork behind it had such a big production, both in sense of labor and financing. After wandering through the art work, we are informed that artists don’t receive any money for their work, that only their travel, production, accommodation expenses were covered by dOCUMENTA (13). We learned that it was “a big honor” for an artist to attend in such an event as dOCUMENTA (13) and it was understandable that the artists were not paid any fee because dOCUMENTA (13) had so many expenses!!!
